A Pain Department's Response to Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Requirements of Sacroiliac and Facet Joint Procedure performance

Introduction: In February 2023 and May 2024, the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid (CMS) announced Local Coverage Determination (LCD) changes for sacroiliac (SI) injections and facet joint procedures delineating patient selection for these interventions. In response, our department developed standardized guidance to support providers and patients. We hypothesize that this clinical guidance implementation improved patient selection within our department and increased appropriate procedural performance, aligning practice with updated coverage requirements and optimizing patient care and access.
