Medial Branch Blocks (MBBs) and Radiofrequency Ablations (RFAs) can treat facet-mediated pain. Insurance companies require that patients have two successful diagnostic MBBs with specific results before performing therapeutic RFA. In June 2023, Medicare implemented policies for coverage of MBBs/RFAs, requiring prior authorization and 4-week global period between procedures when performed in hospitals(1). With these policies, our series of MBBs and RFAs took 3+ months to complete due to obstacles including inefficient follow-ups and insurance denials.
