Peripheral Nerve Stimulation for the Treatment of Anterior Cutaneous Nerve Entrapment Syndrome: A Case Report

Introduction: Anterior cutaneous nerve entrapment syndrome (ACNES) is a frequently overlooked cause of chronic abdominal wall pain, often misdiagnosed as visceral or psychiatric. It results from entrapment of thoracoabdominal intercostal nerves near the rectus abdominis, frequently following surgery or trauma. The diagnosis is clinical, supported by Carnett’s sign and pain relief from local anesthetic injection. While traditional treatments offer limited relief, this case report highlights peripheral nerve stimulation (PNS) as a treatment option for refractory ACNES.
