Multimodal analgesia for perioperative pain management, particularly neuraxial techniques, has been shown to reduce postoperative pulmonary complications, lower oral and systemic opioid requirements, and decrease systemic analgesic side effects. In opioid tolerant patients with severe acute on chronic pain, optimizing neuraxial techniques can enhance a multimodal approach when escalation of current pharmacologic therapies is unattainable.
