Breaking the Pain Cycle: Sphenopalatine Ganglion Block in a Patient with Refractory Headaches

Introduction:      The sphenopalatine ganglion (SPG), located in the pterygopalatine fossa, is a parasympathetic ganglion with sensory and autonomic contributions1. Its function and anatomic location have made it a therapeutic target for managing acute and chronic headache disorders. SPG blockade has demonstrated notable success in cluster headaches, with up to 85.5% of patients endorsing significant relief2. SPG blockade has also demonstrated transient relief, up to 24 hours, in the management of migraines2.
